Vinicius Jr Vows to Continue Anti-Racism Efforts Amid Ballon d’Or Controversy
Brazilian and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has stated his commitment to fighting racism, even if his activism may have affected his chances of winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
Sources close to the player told Reuters that Vinicius remains undeterred despite the voting outcome.
The 24-year-old Vinicius finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting, behind Spanish midfielder Rodri, who plays for Manchester City. Shortly after the announcement, Vinicius took to social media, expressing his resolve.
“I will do it 10 times if I have to. They’re not ready,” he posted on X, following Real Madrid’s decision to cancel plans to attend the ceremony in Paris.
The club’s boycott was reportedly motivated by expectations that Vinicius would not win the award.
When asked for clarification on Vinicius’ post, his management confirmed to Reuters that his message was tied to his ongoing battle against racism in football. His team suggested that his outspoken stance on the issue may have influenced voters, with sources noting, “the football world is not ready to accept a player who fights against the system.”
Vinicius has been the target of racial abuse multiple times during his career in Spain, leading to landmark legal action and convictions in cases against offenders. Despite these incidents, he has continued to perform at an elite level, playing a crucial role in Real Madrid’s recent successes.
Real Madrid was awarded the Men’s Club of the Year trophy, and their manager, Carlo Ancelotti, was named Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the club to victories in both the European and Spanish leagues last season.
France Football, the organisation responsible for the Ballon d’Or awards, has yet to state the concerns raised.
The Ballon d’Or results are determined by a panel of journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations, making the voting process one of the most influential in football. Amid the controversy, several of Vinicius’ teammates rallied to his support.
Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga posted on X, “FOOTBALL POLITICS X. My brother, you are the best player in the world, and no award can say otherwise. Love you, my bro.” Other teammates also expressed support, sharing messages with images of Vinicius and the words, “You are the best.”
Brazilian football legend Marta added her voice to the growing chorus of support, stating in an Instagram video, “I waited all year for Vini Jr to be deservedly recognized as the best player in the world, and now they come to tell me that the Ballon d’Or is not for him.”
Alongside Vinicius, Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham, who has excelled with 19 goals in his debut campaign and helped England reach the Euro 2024 final, secured the third spot in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
