Minnesota Governor Tim Walz unintentionally called Elon Musk “gay” during a campaign event in Michigan on Friday, prompting a swift backlash on social media. While discussing taxes, Walz remarked, “That guy, that gay guy,” referring to Musk.
The comment drew criticism, but Musk, a prominent supporter of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, responded light-heartedly. He said, “I have no problem being called gay tbh,” after a user on X shared the video and labelled Walz’s remark as “beyond pathetic.”
In response to the controversy, the Harris-Walz campaign explained that the Democratic vice presidential nominee misspoke. A campaign spokesman clarified that Walz “stuttered” while trying to say, “That guy got.” They pointed out that in the video, a member of the audience could be heard yelling, “Dips–t!” just before Walz’s comment, which led to him laughing and stumbling over his words.
“He got stuck on the G in that guy got while trying not to laugh at the remark from the crowd,” the spokesman added.
