Oslo, Norway – The Norwegian royal family has provided a concerning update on Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s ongoing battle with pulmonary fibrosis, revealing that her condition is worsening and she now requires more rest to manage her health.
The 51-year-old royal, who has been fighting the incurable lung disease, is experiencing an increase in daily symptoms, which are now affecting her ability to fulfill her royal duties.
Official Statement on the Crown Princess’s Health
Officials from the Norwegian palace confirmed in a statement that Mette-Marit’s declining health will require frequent adjustments to her official schedule.
“The Crown Princess has daily symptoms and ailments that affect her ability to perform her duties. She needs more rest, and her daily routine changes more quickly.”
Due to these challenges, the palace warned that last-minute cancellations of her public engagements may occur more often.

Despite her struggles, the statement emphasized the Crown Princess’s strong determination to continue her work, stating:
“The Crown Princess has a strong desire to continue working, and therefore we will organize her official program in the future in the best possible way so that her health and work can be combined.”
A Long Battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis
Mette-Marit’s health condition was first made public in October 2018, when she revealed that her working capacity would vary depending on her treatment needs.
Her condition worsened in September 2023 and October 2024, forcing her to take extended sick leave and cancel all of her royal engagements for several weeks.

Speaking to Norwegian newspaper DN in August 2023, ahead of her 50th birthday, she reflected on the fragility of life, saying:
“When you reach 50, you understand that life is not eternal.”
Personal Struggles Amid Health Crisis
In addition to her health battle, the Crown Princess has faced emotional turmoil following the legal troubles of her eldest son, Marius Borg Høiby.
In November 2024, the 28-year-old was arrested in Oslo on rape charges, marking his third arrest in recent months. However, police released him, citing insufficient evidence to continue his detention.

Since then, Oslo police have opened a new investigation into another sexual assault allegation against him, though no formal charges have been filed.
Future Uncertainty
As Crown Princess Mette-Marit continues to navigate her worsening illness, the Norwegian royal family is adjusting to her changing needs while ensuring she can continue her public service as much as her health allows.
The nation remains hopeful and supportive, as the royal family works to balance personal challenges with their public responsibilities.
