British Holidaymaker Drowns After Being Swept Away by Wave in Menorca
A 72-year-old British holidaymaker has tragically drowned after being swept into the sea by a wave while walking along the coast in Menorca.
The incident occurred around 1 PM yesterday near the renowned sea arch, Pont d’en Gil, located on the northern side of Ciutadella bay.
Witnesses residing in a nearby apartment complex noticed the man struggling in the water and promptly called emergency services.
However, strong sea currents carried him further away from the shoreline, and he was pronounced dead by the time firefighters reached him in a dinghy.
His body was later transported to Ciutadella Port, where it was formally certified dead. An autopsy is expected to confirm that the holidaymaker died from drowning, ruling out any serious head injury from the fall.
At the time of the incident, the area was experiencing strong easterly winds. The victim is believed to have been staying in a four-star hotel located just a five-minute drive away in Cala d’en Blanes.
Local authorities have launched a routine investigation, coordinated by a local court, but no official statements have been made as of yet.
Emergency responders, including local police, coastguards, paramedics, and Civil Guard officers, were mobilised to assist.
Pont d’en Gil is a striking natural formation shaped by the powerful waves, resembling a suspension bridge through which medium and small-sized boats can pass. Nearby, the underwater cave known as Sa Cigonya is a popular spot for divers on the island.
