A former Doncaster Prison officer broke down in tears as she was sentenced to 21 months in jail for engaging in a sexual relationship with an inmate while working at the facility.
Katie Evans, 26, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court after admitting to misconduct in public office for her involvement with Daniel Brownley, a convicted burglar.
The court heard that Evans, who had worked at the prison since she was 21, performed sex acts on Brownley, shared 140 phone calls with him, moved money through bank accounts on his behalf, and disclosed confidential prison information.
Evans had also boasted to a former prison officer that she had performed oral sex on Brownley and referred to herself as his “queen.”
Sentencing Evans, Judge Jeremy Richardson said: “It appears you indulged in some form of sexual activity in the prison. It has been described that on one occasion you had oral sex with him. It is truly a terrible situation for a judge to be passing sentence on a corrupt prison officer.”
The judge emphasized that Evans had been manipulated by Brownley, who was an experienced criminal, and noted that she was young and immature at the time of the offense in 2020.
However, he stated that “being inexperienced and immature is no excuse” for her actions.
While acknowledging that Evans showed genuine remorse and posed no future danger to the public, Judge Richardson said her sentence could have been longer but was reduced out of mercy, considering the impact on her young daughter and the difficulties she will face in prison as a former officer.
Evans waved at her family as she was led away in tears.
The court heard that Brownley was originally sentenced to five-and-a-half years in 2016 for attempted robbery, burglary, and handling stolen goods. He was later recalled to prison in 2020 for breaching his licence conditions.
