HMP Frankland, known for housing some of the UK’s most notorious criminals, has seen a troubling number of assaults over the past year. Reports indicate that there have been numerous attacks involving makeshift weapons, including blades, against prisoners, guards, and staff.
Among the 140 recorded assaults at the Category A facility in Brasside, County Durham, was a serious incident where a prisoner used a hammer to attack another inmate in a workshop toilet.
The prison, often referred to as “monster mansion,” currently holds over 800 men, including high-profile convicts such as Ian Huntley, Wayne Couzens, and Levi Bellfield.
Campaigners have expressed concern over the state of the public sector jail estate, citing issues of overcrowding and deteriorating facilities.
