UK General Election Live: Labour’s Landslide Victory Ends Rwanda Deportation Policy
Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has declared the controversial Rwanda deportation policy “effectively dead” following a sweeping victory in the General Election.
Sources within Labour informed The Telegraph that one of the initial actions of the new government will be to dismantle the Conservative scheme, which aimed to deport migrants arriving illegally in the UK to Rwanda. This decision aligns with Labour’s pre-election pledge to abolish the policy if elected.
The newly appointed Prime Minister is set to convene his first cabinet meeting at 11 am on Saturday, where the party will outline its priorities for the initial phase of its administration.
Starmer finalized his top-tier appointments on Friday, naming Angela Rayner Deputy Prime Minister. Yvette Cooper and David Lammy were assigned the pivotal roles of Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary, respectively. The Prime Minister will lead his new Cabinet in their inaugural meeting and address the media, emphasizing his commitment to immediate action on his first full day at Downing Street.
In addition to Rayner’s dual role as Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary, Starmer confirmed Rachel Reeves as Britain’s first female Chancellor of the Exchequer. Pat McFadden has been appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
Other key positions include John Healey as Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting as Health Secretary, and Bridget Phillipson as Education Secretary. Shabana Mahmood and Ed Miliband will continue in their respective roles as Justice Secretary and Energy Secretary, while barrister Richard Hermer KC replaces former Attorney General Emily Thornberry.
The newly formed Cabinet will gather ahead of Starmer’s first press conference as Prime Minister, where he is expected to face questions from journalists and outline his administration’s forthcoming agenda.
