Toronto — Scarlett Johansson made a striking appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, where she both promoted her directorial debut and drew attention for her bold red carpet look.
The award-winning actress, 40, arrived at the premiere of Eleanor The Great in a pale pink Valentino gown. The backless design showcased a collection of detailed tattoos across her shoulders and spine, including large roses and a lamb motif.
Red Carpet Look
Johansson completed the look with a twisted updo, smoky eye makeup, and glossy pink lips.
Bright red nail polish and dangling diamond earrings added to the glamorous presentation.
A New Role Behind the Camera
The film, set for a nationwide release on September 26, marks Johansson’s first time directing a feature. Eleanor The Great tells the story of Eleanor Morgenstein, a 94-year-old woman who relocates from Florida to New York after the death of her best friend. The character, played by June Squibb, becomes involved with a group of Holocaust survivors at a Manhattan community center, where she hides her own history by claiming to be one of them.
First Day Challenges
Johansson reflected on the start of filming in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, describing the crew’s first day on location in Coney Island as “cold and hectic.”
She explained that the team had little time to settle into a rhythm before shooting began, making the process technically difficult.
Despite her concerns, cast members praised her leadership on set. Actress Erin Kellyman, who plays Nina, said she never sensed any stress. “This is what makes Scarlett a brilliant director,” Kellyman said. “I was just having fun.”
Festival Spotlight
TIFF organizers highlighted Eleanor The Great as one of the festival’s most anticipated premieres, noting Johansson’s transition from established Hollywood star to filmmaker.
The project adds a new dimension to a career that spans decades, including leading roles in Lost in Translation, Marriage Story, and Marvel’s Black Widow.
