February 16, 2025—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a strong declaration today, reaffirming his commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
He stated, “I will never accept any decisions between the United States and Russia about Ukraine. Never.”
In a speech to diplomats and Ukrainian leaders, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine’s fate must be determined by Ukrainians alone, with no outside interference.
He rejected any potential negotiations or agreements between the United States and Russia regarding Ukraine, stressing that such decisions would undermine the country’s autonomy.
“We have fought for our freedom and territorial integrity, and we will not allow any country, no matter how powerful, to make decisions about us behind our backs,” Zelensky said.

His comments reflect Ukraine’s longstanding stance on the issue, which has been a point of tension throughout the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Zelensky’s remarks come amid heightened discussions surrounding Ukraine’s future relationship with the U.S. and Russia. While the United States has been a crucial ally in providing military and financial support to Ukraine, there have been growing concerns about the possibility of a negotiated settlement to the war. Despite these concerns, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine is determined to regain its occupied territories and pursue its goals without compromising its national interests.
The U.S. has consistently supported Ukraine’s sovereignty and has been vocal about opposing Russia’s aggression. However, occasional reports have suggested that some international leaders might push for diplomatic talks between Washington and Moscow to seek an end to the war.
President Zelensky, however, has made it clear that any such discussions, without Ukraine’s involvement, are unacceptable.
“We are the ones who live through this war every day; we are the ones who will decide our future,” Zelensky added. “Ukraine will not be the subject of someone else’s talks or agreements.”

The Ukrainian leader’s statement is expected to shape the ongoing discussions about Ukraine’s post-war future and its relations with the United States and Russia.
It reminds Zelensky and the Ukrainian people that the principle of self-determination remains non-negotiable, and any peace process must include Ukraine’s full participation.
As the war continues, the international community will likely continue to scrutinize the dynamics between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, while Ukraine remains firm in its stance that it will not be sidelined in any future negotiations.
