Victor Osimhen’s fitness for Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations semifinal match against South Africa has been confirmed.
The Napoli striker’s absence from the team’s travel to Bouake, Ivory Coast, raised eyebrows as the rest of the squad embarked on their journey. However, Osimhen remained under the close supervision of Nigeria’s medical team in Abidjan, where he continued his recovery.
Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro’s reluctance to update Osimhen’s condition during a press conference added to the uncertainty surrounding the player’s availability. Nevertheless, the Super Eagles’ official account confirmed that Osimhen had been deemed fit to participate in the crucial semifinal match.
Osimhen, who showcased his talent with a crucial goal in Nigeria’s earlier matches, resumed training with his teammates and is expected to feature in Peseiro’s starting lineup.
The declaration of Osimhen’s fitness is a relief for Nigeria, especially on the eve of their record-extending 15th AFCON semifinal. Peseiro emphasised the importance of delivering a top-notch performance against South Africa, acknowledging the challenge posed by the formidable opponent.
Nigeria, a three-time AFCON champion, is eyeing a spot in the final and will await the outcome of the match between DR Congo and host nation Ivory Coast should they emerge victorious against South Africa.
