Nigeria’s star striker, Victor Osimhen, was notably absent from the squad’s travel plans ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations semifinal against South Africa. The Super Eagles announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Osimhen’s absence was due to abdominal discomfort, preventing him from joining the team’s flight from Abidjan to Bouaké for Wednesday’s crucial match.
According to team officials, Osimhen is under close medical supervision, with a medical staff member remaining in Abidjan to monitor his condition. He hopes to join the squad before the match, provided he receives clearance by tomorrow morning.
Despite scoring just one goal in the tournament, Osimhen’s relentless efforts on the field have been instrumental in Nigeria’s journey to the semifinals, marking their 16th appearance at this stage of the competition, a record-equalling achievement. Only Egypt, with seven titles to their name, has reached as many semifinals, having participated in 26 tournaments.
The upcoming showdown against South Africa carries historical significance, reminiscent of their semifinal encounter in 2000, which saw Nigeria emerge victorious with a 2-0 win in Lagos. With three titles to their credit, Nigeria last lifted the trophy in 2013, while South Africa’s sole triumph came in 1996.
Meanwhile, in the other semifinal matchup, host nation Ivory Coast is set to face off against DR Congo in what promises to be another thrilling encounter.
