Ryanair has reignited debate over its strict hand luggage policies with a cheeky social media post that took aim at passengers who ignore size restrictions.
The budget airline, known for its no-nonsense baggage regulations, shared a sarcastic message on Facebook that praised passengers who comply with its carry-on rules.
“Good morning to passengers who understand bag measurements (you’re our favourites),” the post read.
However, rather than being met with amusement, the post sparked a wave of frustration in the comments section.
Dozens of social media users criticized the airline’s baggage policies and expressed irritation over the size-checking process used at boarding gates.
Responding to recent criticism, a Ryanair spokesperson outlined the airline’s hand luggage policy in detail.
She explained that passengers travelling on a basic fare are allowed one small cabin bag, which must not exceed dimensions of 40 x 20 x 25cm.
This item—typically a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack—must fit entirely under the seat in front of the passenger.

“To ensure compliance, staff may place the bag into the upper compartment of the bag sizer,” the spokesperson said. “The bag must fit fully inside without any part, such as handles or straps, protruding. If not, passengers will be charged up to €60 to carry it onboard.”
Ryanair uses its signature blue and yellow bag sizers at boarding gates to confirm compliance with the size restrictions. If a bag is too large, it is tagged and placed in the aircraft hold, with the passenger required to pay an additional fee.
Those who purchase priority boarding and two cabin bags are permitted to bring both a small personal item and a larger cabin bag.
The latter must not exceed 55 x 40 x 20cm and is stored in the overhead lockers.
However, Ryanair warns that only space for around 100 large cabin bags is available on each flight, which typically carries up to 197 passengers.

“To verify these bags fit, they may be placed in the lower section of our sizer,” the spokesperson added. “The bag must fit completely within the permitted dimensions.”
Ryanair emphasized that its sizers are built with extra space beyond the stated bag dimensions. However, any luggage that extends beyond the limits—even slightly, including wheels or handles—will be subject to an additional €75 charge to be checked into the hold.
The spokesperson urged travelers to measure their luggage before flying and to only bring items that match what was selected during booking.
For those needing more space, Ryanair also offers checked luggage options. Passengers can pay to check in a bag of up to 20kg, which must be handed in at the check-in desk before going through airport security.
Baggage fees vary depending on weight and when they are purchased.

Typically, a 10kg checked bag costs between €11.99 and €29.99, while a 20kg bag ranges from €18.99 to €59.99 when booked online.
Despite ongoing complaints from travelers, many passengers have taken to social media to share tips for finding bags that meet Ryanair’s strict requirements.
Videos showcasing affordable carry-on options that fit the sizer have become popular among savvy fliers hoping to avoid last-minute charges at the gate.
