Massive Fire in East London Triggers Major Search and Rescue Operation
A major search and rescue operation is currently underway following a significant fire that broke out in a block of flats in East London.
The London Fire Brigade deployed over 200 firefighters and 40 fire engines to tackle the blaze on Freshwater Road in Dagenham, which began shortly before 3 a.m.
The fire, which spread to scaffolding surrounding the building, as well as the ground floor, sixth floor, and roof, prompted the evacuation of more than 100 residents.
Four individuals were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service (LAS), with two subsequently taken to the hospital
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. However, it has been reported by BBC News that the building’s cladding, which was deemed “non-compliant,” was in the process of being removed when the fire broke out. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that the building was already known to have multiple safety issues.
London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “The building has a number of fire safety issues known to London Fire Brigade.
A full simultaneous evacuation of the building was immediately carried out, and a significant search and rescue operation is underway.”
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her concern and gratitude towards the emergency services, stating, “My thoughts are with all those affected by the major fire incident in Dagenham.
I thank the London Fire Brigade and all emergency services on the ground for their bravery and swift response.” She also noted that ministers are being kept informed about the ongoing situation.
