A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Ushkanka, Russia, following the death of 17-year-old Milena Shevelyova, who was mauled by pigs in a pigsty on November 23
Initial investigations suggested an attack by the animals, but police now believe her neighbor, Igor Zaika, played a role in her death.
Zaika has been charged with causing death by negligence. In a police statement, he admitted to striking the teenager twice after she entered the hovel to feed the animals.
Authorities allege that the blows rendered her unconscious, leaving her vulnerable to the pigs.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a conflict between Zaika and Milena’s father. Police allege that Zaika intended to set the pigsty on fire but was surprised when Milena arrived unexpectedly.
Milena’s boyfriend discovered her unresponsive body in the hovel, bearing bite marks.
Paramedics who attended the scene confirmed her death. A police investigation, including forensic examinations, has since been launched.
In a statement, investigators said they are examining evidence linking Zaika to the incident and that he remains in custody for further questioning. The investigation is ongoing.
