United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to acknowledge that he understands the reasoning behind U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial tariff strategy, according to The Times.
In a significant shift from traditional center-left positions, Starmer will reportedly tell voters on Sunday that while he disagrees with Trump’s economic nationalist approach, he recognizes its political appeal.
“Trump has done something that we don’t agree with, but there’s a reason why people are behind him on this,” a spokesperson for the Prime Minister told The Times.
The statement reflects an acknowledgment that the global economic landscape has fundamentally changed.
“The world has changed, globalization is over, and we are now in a new era,” the spokesperson added. “We’ve got to demonstrate that our approach — a more active Labour government, a more reformist government — can provide the answers for people in every part of the country.”
According to the report, Starmer’s upcoming address will highlight the collapse of globalization and acknowledge the growing public backlash against policies like free trade and mass migration.

He is expected to tell the British public that these policies have failed millions of ordinary voters.
Starmer has not spoken directly with President Trump regarding the newly announced tariffs.
However, the Prime Minister did hold a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday. Both leaders reportedly agreed that a trade war benefits no one, although they also decided that “nothing should be off the table,” according to the outlet.
President Trump triggered international concern on Wednesday after announcing sweeping new tariffs affecting nearly every country.
The measures include a 10% tariff on all goods imported from the United Kingdom, marking a dramatic escalation in Trump’s ongoing push for economic nationalism.
