Google has been accused of favouring Democratic candidates in presidential elections over the past four cycles by a right-leaning media watchdog. The Media Research Center (MRC) claimed in a report that Google engaged in 41 instances of “election interference” since 2008, allegedly censoring Republicans while aiding Democratic candidates.
The report from MRC asserted that Google used its influence to support liberal candidates and censor their opponents, focusing on aiding Democratic nominees. This follows an analysis by AllSides, which revealed a skewed representation of Google News favouring specific perspectives.
Criticism against Google escalated when its Gemini AI image generator produced historically inaccurate images, including depictions of black Vikings and female popes. Despite these claims, Google has denied any wrongdoing.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk weighed in on the issue, stating on social media that Google routinely interferes with assisting Democratic candidates due to the left-leaning political views within its censorship teams.
MRC’s allegations date back to 2008 when they claimed Google supported Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries. Subsequent elections saw similar accusations, including claims of bias against Republican candidates such as Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.
The MRC report referenced Dr Robert Epstein’s testimony to Congress, alleging that Google’s search algorithm influenced millions of votes favouring Democratic candidates. However, Google disputed Epstein’s findings, labelling them as flawed and widely debunked.
In the 2020 election cycle, MRC accused Google of targeting Democratic candidate Tulsi Gabbard by deactivating her Ads account after a search surge following a primary debate. Google refuted this claim, attributing the incident to routine security measures.
The MRC also asserted that Google’s bias affected the outcome of the 2022 Georgia Senate race between Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock, favouring the latter in search results. Google responded by stating that third-party evaluations found no evidence of political bias.
A Google spokesperson dismissed MRC’s claims as baseless and inaccurate, reiterating its commitment to impartiality and noting its success in amplifying conservative voices on its platforms. They emphasized Google’s safeguards against bias and misinformation.
