German Finance Minister Christian Lindner has proposed the idea of the UK and France teaming up to create a “nuclear shield” against Russia.

This suggestion comes from former US President Donald Trump’s remarks, implying a willingness to let Russia act freely against NATO members if they meet specific defence spending targets.

Lindner’s inquiry revolves around the conditions under which Paris and London would be willing to bolster their nuclear capabilities for collective security. He emphasizes the importance of addressing these tough questions to safeguard European peace.

Both the UK and France possess nuclear arsenals and maintain independent control over their weapons despite being NATO members. France historically positions itself as a counterbalance to US influence within NATO and doesn’t participate in NATO’s nuclear planning group.

President Emmanuel Macron insists on France’s independence in nuclear matters, citing its special responsibility as a nuclear power in Europe and its commitment to allies and European partners.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden criticized Trump’s remarks, calling them “dangerous” and “un-American,” raising concerns among US partners about its reliability on the global stage. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other top security officials maintain that there’s no alternative to NATO’s nuclear umbrella.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg welcomes European allies’ increased defence spending but stresses that it shouldn’t undermine NATO’s unity. Stoltenberg emphasizes the effectiveness of NATO’s nuclear deterrent, which relies partly on US warheads deployed in Europe. NATO conducts annual nuclear exercises to ensure readiness and deter potential aggressors, primarily Russia.
