Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and the world’s richest man with a net worth exceeding $400 billion, is reportedly interested in purchasing Premier League football club Liverpool, according to his father, Errol Musk.
Musk, who owns global giants like Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter), is considering expanding his business portfolio to include ownership of a football club.
Speaking to Times Radio, Errol Musk addressed the rumours, revealing that his son desires to buy Liverpool, although he stopped short of confirming any active negotiations.
“I can’t comment on that. They’ll raise the price,” he said when asked about the reports. When pressed further, he added, “Oh, yes. But that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to, yes. Anybody would want to – so would I!”
Errol also noted the family’s strong personal ties to Liverpool. Musk’s grandmother was born in the city, and they are connected to its cultural history.
“We have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a lot of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool, you know,” he explained.
Liverpool FC, currently owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has transformed dramatically since the American sports investment group acquired the club in 2010 for a reported £300 million. Under their stewardship, Liverpool has achieved significant success, including winning the Premier League and the Champions League. The club’s value has soared over the years, with Forbes estimating it to exceed $5 billion.
In September 2023, FSG sold a minority stake in the club to American investment firm Dynasty Equity, a move to strengthen Liverpool’s financial position. Despite the sale, FSG maintained its commitment to the club. At the time, FSG president Mike Gordon stated, “Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever.
We have always said that if an investment partner is right for Liverpool, we will pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club’s long-term financial resiliency and future growth.”
This is not the first time Elon Musk’s name has been associated with a football club. In 2022, Musk caused a stir when he tweeted about considering purchasing Manchester United, the team he supported as a child. However, he later clarified that it was a joke.
“This is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams,” he said then. “Although, if it were any team, it would be Man Utd. They were my favourite team as a kid.”
The news of Musk’s potential interest in Liverpool comes amid other high-profile controversies involving the billionaire. Recently, Musk has voiced support for far-right activist Tommy Robinson, calling for his release from prison, and suggested that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer should face legal action over his response to the grooming gangs scandal.
Labour leader Starmer responded to Musk’s remarks during a press conference on Monday, accusing him and others of “spreading lies and misinformation far and wide” on social media platforms.
As speculation about Musk’s interest in Liverpool grows, it remains unclear whether the billionaire’s desire to own the iconic football club will translate into a formal bid or remain another chapter in his unpredictable public narrative.
