The BBC star known for her role in ‘Alma’s Not Normal’, Sophie Willan, has shared a hilarious and somewhat embarrassing story about being caught having sex in the Blue Peter garden. Speaking on the panel show ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’, Willan, 37, admitted that the incident occurred after a night of heavy drinking.
She revealed that she and her boyfriend, comedian Jonny Pelham, thought they could get away with it behind a shrub in the famous BBC garden.
Willan humorously explained, “It was a full moon. I’d drunk a lot of Guinness, and there was a big shrub we thought would be a good spot.” But their passion was interrupted when security guards arrived on scooters, informing them that their activities had been spotted on CCTV.
The guards reportedly told her, “We can all see you in the studios on CCTV. ” She quipped that, despite the incident, she never received the coveted Blue Peter badge.
Her co-star on the show, Jamali Maddix, jokingly responded, “They should have presented you with a Blue Peter Badge.” The story had the audience in stitches, with Willan laughing off the awkward moment.
Sophie also opened up about her long-term relationship with Pelham, revealing that they’ve been together for eight years. She recalled their unconventional romance, which started with a drunken accident.
I wouldn’t say I like first dates. I think I should just get drunk with someone by accident, sleep with them, and then see how it goes from there,” she said. The pair were friends before becoming romantically involved, with Sophie admitting she was attracted to him after a night of drinking. “Something strange happened to me after the Guinness,” she joked, adding that she suddenly thought, “He’s quite hot,” and moved on him.
Sophie has built a career as a comedian by embracing life’s awkward and embarrassing moments. She explained, “This is why we do what we do as comedians. You go on stage; you own it. You’ve got to make the most of it. It’s out there now.”
Sophie humorously confessed that every time she passes that particular shrub in the Blue Peter garden, she thinks, “God, it’s tiny.” Despite the awkwardness, she’s found humour in the situation, especially given that she and Jonny have been together ever since.
Willan is no stranger to sharing wild stories. In a previous interview, she revealed that she once robbed her old boss while dressed as a garden gnome. The bizarre tale took place during her time working as an escort.
Sophie had written a play called ‘The Gnome Bandit’ and found herself discussing the play with a man she met on a night out. The man mentioned a gnome festival in Wales, which Sophie was eager to attend but lacked the money to do so.
She remembered a tactic she used at the escort agency to get her share of earnings: “At the end of your bookings, you’d get your percentage for your madam, and you chuck it in the washing machine.” Sophie and a friend decided to raid the madam’s in-call apartment, where cash was stored in the washing machine. To avoid being recognised on CCTV, Sophie donned her garden gnome costume to disguise herself, making for an even more absurd caper.
Willan’s candidness and ability to laugh at her outrageous experiences have made her a beloved figure in comedy. Her stories of wild antics, both funny and bizarre, continue to captivate her audiences.
