BBC Radio 5 Live in Chaos as Tony Livesey and Clare McDonnell Feud Over Offensive Email
BBC Radio 5 Live is reportedly in disarray following a fallout between presenters Tony Livesey and Clare McDonnell over an offensive email mistakenly sent by Livesey.
The email, which criticised McDonnell’s presenting skills, has sparked significant tension between the two, who have co-hosted the Drivetime show since February 2022.
McDonnell, 47, is reportedly refusing to work alongside Livesey, 59, leading to the pair alternating shifts to avoid each other. This ongoing feud has created ‘chaos’ within the station, prompting BBC management to consider permanently separating the two presenters. The disruption caused by their conflict is palpable, raising concerns about the station’s stability.
Livesey may be relegated to the late-night slot he held when he first joined the BBC in 2006, a move described as a “kick in the teeth” for the seasoned journalist.
“It’s made the atmosphere at 5 Live frosty,” a source told The Sun, adding that the ongoing feud has caused significant disruption as staff are shuffled into different roles.
The situation escalated to the point where Clare is pleased with the station’s response, feeling her concerns were taken seriously, while Livesey reportedly feels unfairly treated.
Since the incident, both presenters have been hosting the drivetime show separately. Johnny I’Anso has filled in with McDonnell on Mondays and Tuesdays, while Livesey has co-hosted with journalist Leila Nathoo on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Come December, Livesey will return to his late-night slot, a decision he is reportedly unhappy about. “Tony has lost a perfect gig because of that message to Clare,” said a source, emphasising the severity of the situation.
Tensions between the two presenters have been brewing for some time, and their relationship is becoming increasingly strained. An on-air exchange last year highlighted the growing friction when Livesey praised the professionalism of Wimbledon correspondents, prompting McDonnell to quip, “It’ll be good to work alongside professionals, for a change.”
As BBC Radio 5 Live navigates this internal conflict, Chris Warburton is set to replace Livesey in December, joining McDonnell as the permanent host of Live Drive. The ongoing drama reminds us of the challenges of maintaining professional relationships in the broadcasting industry.
