The 2024 Oscars ceremony unfolded as expected, with the film “Oppenheimer” claiming the spotlight in both awards and fashion. In contrast to past years’ daring outfits like Bjork’s iconic Swan dress or Celine Dion’s reverse tuxedo, this year’s fashion scene was marked by refined elegance rather than rebellion.
Gone were the days of bold colours and extravagant designs; instead, celebrities opted for solid and structured shapes. From Cynthia Enviro’s green leather ensemble to Emma Stone’s Louis Vuitton peplum dress and Zendaya’s metallic Armani Privé gown, the red carpet was dominated by sleek black and white looks, signalling a departure from the usual pastel palette.
However, German actress Sandra Hüller stole the spotlight with her understated yet dramatic style. Hüller, nominated for Best Actress and starring in two of the night’s top films, stunned in a custom Schiaparelli black velvet dress adorned with an off-the-shoulder neckline and a bejewelled keyhole detail. Her Cartier necklace, boasting 392 diamonds, added an extra touch of glamour.
Although Hüller did not win an Oscar, she undoubtedly won the red carpet. Later, at the Vanity Fair party, she dazzled in another Schiaparelli creation, a cream-coloured dress with a rhinestone-adorned neckline. Her stylist, Jordan Johnson Chung, described her iconic black dress as “wearable art,” emphasising their goal of making her shine.
This awards season has not only solidified Hüller’s status as a talented actress but also established her as a fashion icon. From custom Louis Vuitton gowns to chic trouser suits, she has consistently impressed with her outfit choices and hairstyles, making the mullet look stylish.
Despite speculation that Louis Vuitton or Phoebe Philo would dress her for the Oscars, Hüller chose Schiaparelli. The Italian fashion house, known for its avant-garde designs and collaboration with Salvador Dalí, has recently become a favourite among celebrities seeking to make a statement on the red carpet.
Hüller’s fellow nominee, Emily Blunt, also opted for Schiaparelli, sporting a cream gown with unique strap details. However, Hüller’s modern interpretation of old-school glamour truly stole the show, solidifying her status as one of film’s most fashion-forward stars.
