A 50-year-old woman from Indiana has been arrested after allegedly travelling to Washington, D.C., with plans to kidnap and assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump, according to federal prosecutors.
Nathalie Rose Jones, of Lafayette, was taken into custody on 16 August. A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, issued on 18 August, confirmed she faces federal charges over online threats directed at the president.
Prosecutors say Jones used Facebook and Instagram to post graphic threats, including one message that read: “I am willing to sacrificially kill this POTUS by disembowelling him and cutting out his trachea with Liz Cheney and all The Affirmation present.”
She also referenced what she described as an “arrest and removal ceremony” for Mr Trump.
The U.S. Secret Service launched an investigation after tracing the posts to Jones. Agents interviewed her on 15 August, during which she allegedly admitted making the threats and said she would attempt to kill the president “if given the opportunity.”
According to court documents, she claimed her motivation was to avenge lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. She later recanted, saying she no longer intended to carry out the threats.
Jones is charged with threatening the life of the president and transmitting interstate communications containing threats to kidnap or injure another person. Each offence carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said: “Threatening the life of the President is one of the most serious crimes and one that will be met with swift and unwavering prosecution.”
Officials noted that Jones has a documented history of mental illness, which she herself acknowledged in her social media activity.
At this stage, no public record of her legal representation has been released.
