A British woman and her South African fiancé were tragically discovered dead in their villa in Hoi An, Vietnam, on Boxing Day, leaving friends and family in shock.
Greta Marie Otteson, a social media manager, and her fiancé, Arno Els Quinton, 36, were found lifeless in separate rooms at the Hoi An Silverbell villa, located in Quang Nam province.
The couple reportedly got engaged earlier in December and had been staying at the villa since July 4.
Local cleaning staff made the grim discovery, finding Ms Otteson in bed in room 101 and later alerting authorities, who broke into Mr Quinton’s locked room to find him deceased.
No Signs of Foul Play
According to the Quang Nam Provincial Police, the scene showed no signs of a struggle, with the couple’s belongings and phones untouched. Empty wine bottles collected from the villa will undergo further testing. Authorities reported no visible injuries or trauma on the bodies.
A police spokesperson stated:
“There were no signs of ransacking at the scene. The victims’ belongings and phones were untouched.”
Tributes Pour In
Ms. Otteson, who had previously lived in Dubai, Paris, Bahrain, and Los Angeles while working in fashion and marketing, had been backpacking across Asia before settling in Vietnam.
Mr Quinton, a barista, musician, and streamer, shared on social media just days before the tragedy about his plans for the future, including developing a game and rescuing a dog from a meat market.
Friends and loved ones expressed their grief online. One friend, Dayle Visser, wrote:
“Rest in peace, my brother. You were real and lived life harder than most people could ever dream of. I love you and I will always miss you.”
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed its support for Ms Otteson’s family and is in contact with local authorities. Investigations into the cause of death are ongoing.
