Princess of Wales, 42, Still Recovering After Cancer Treatment, Sources Say
Kate Middleton is reportedly still in the process of returning to full health following her challenging year of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer in March.
A close friend of the Princess of Wales, who is now cancer-free, says she still has some way to go before she is “back to normal.”
Despite the progress, a palace source told People that Princess Catherine, 42, still prioritises her recovery and family.
“She’s not back to normal yet,” they explained, but added, “There’s light at the end of the tunnel.” The royal is focused on herself and her family, and her return to public-facing duties will be gradual.
While she hasn’t fully recovered, sources close to the princess remain optimistic. “She has to get back on top of it. And she will, if left alone, work it out for herself,” another insider shared. However, they noted that her work life will return to its usual pace sometime soon.
Her absence from public appearances earlier in 2024 led to speculation about her well-being, which was eventually clarified with the announcement of her cancer diagnosis.
According to Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary, Ailsa Anderson, the princess reportedly “looks better and better” as she recovers.
Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith emphasised that Princess Catherine is taking control of her return to the royal spotlight. “She is doing what works best for her,” Smith said, highlighting Middleton’s evolving approach to work.
In the meantime, insiders have noted that Princess Catherine and Prince William have intensely focused on their family. “Family is the most important thing,” said a source close to the couple. “You can’t go through something like that and leave the other side unchanged. She is a different person now.”
The couple’s efforts to balance their royal duties with personal priorities have intensified recently, particularly as they prepare for Prince William’s future role as monarch. As Bedell Smith pointed out, the king’s cancer treatment has led to a shift in responsibilities, with William taking on more duties alongside his wife.
The royals are reportedly adjusting to their future roles sooner than expected. “They are next in line for the biggest job of their lives,” Smith explained.
“Kate’s health has taken priority, but it’s also allowed everyone to take a step back and figure out what’s important right now.”
In line with this, palace insiders recently suggested that royal staff began drawing up succession plans after the king’s coronation in May 2023, signalling that preparations for the future are underway.
Kensington Palace has yet to comment on the ongoing situation.
