US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed Friday that forces in Syria have successfully eliminated Abu-‘Abd al-Rahman al-Makki, a senior leader of the terrorist group Hurras al-Din.
According to CENTCOM, al-Makki was killed in a “targeted kinetic strike” conducted in Syria.
Al-Makki, a council member and high-ranking leader within Hurras al-Din, was responsible for overseeing the group’s terrorist operations in Syria. Hurras al-Din is known for its ideological alignment with Al-Qaeda and its opposition to Western interests and its allies.
“CENTCOM remains committed to the enduring defeat of terrorists in the CENTCOM area of responsibility who threaten the United States, its allies and partners, and regional stability,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, Commander of US Central Command.
This strike is part of a broader strategy as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced earlier this month the repositioning of US military forces across the Middle East to support allies, including Israel. The USS Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and its battle group were among the major resources redeployed to the region.
Hurras al-Din has been officially designated as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” under Executive Order 13224 since September 2019.
