President Biden has sent a warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him not to launch a full-scale attack on the Hamas-controlled city of Rafah.
Biden has stated that the United States will no longer provide weapons typically used to handle such situations, indicating a change in U.S. policy regarding arms support.
This statement comes amidst reports that the Biden administration has halted the transmission of powerful precision bombs to Israel. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed the pause but emphasized that a final decision on the shipment’s fate had not been made.
Biden’s stance drew criticism from pro-Israel lawmakers such as Sen. Mitt Romney, who described it as bad policy and a negative message to allies.
The president also hinted at a potential change in Gaza’s administration, suggesting that Arab states could occupy the region after Hamas’s defeat by Israel. Biden mentioned ongoing discussions with five Arab leaders regarding this possibility, although details about which nations are involved were not disclosed.
Concerns have been raised about the impact of U.S. arms on civilian casualties in Gaza, prompting Biden to emphasize a shift away from supporting weapons and artillery used in population centres.
Biden’s proposed Arab occupation of Gaza aligns with previous Israeli suggestions for a transitional phase in the region, akin to post-World War II denazification efforts in Germany.
While Biden did not name specific Arab nations involved in the discussions, potential partners could include Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The situation remains complex as it is uncertain if any Arab states are willing to assume administration responsibilities in Gaza, which was historically under Egyptian control until the 1967 Six-Day War.
President Biden has consistently advised against Israeli military action in Rafah, emphasizing the need to avoid escalation and civilian casualties in the region.
Regarding ongoing support, Biden assured Israel of continued assistance in defence capabilities like the Iron Dome missile defence system.
Despite recent pro-Israel remarks, Biden has faced criticism from various quarters, including anti-Israel protesters labelling him “Genocide Joe.” However, he has maintained a firm stance on Israel’s right to self-defence against Hamas attacks.
This stance has caused concerns within Biden’s Democratic base, particularly among younger voters, Arab Americans, and Muslim Americans, who have criticized what they perceive as disproportionate Israeli actions in Gaza.
Netanyahu has responded defiantly to Biden’s criticisms, emphasizing Israel’s determination to defend itself against genocidal threats and historical parallels with the Holocaust.
As tensions persist in the region, international attention remains focused on efforts to prevent further conflict and promote a lasting peace agreement between Israel and Palestine.
