World’s Oldest Conjoined Twins Pass Away at Age 62
Lori and George Schappell, recognized as the oldest conjoined twins globally, recently passed away at the age of 62 at a hospital in Pennsylvania, as reported in their obituaries by Leibensperger Funeral Homes.
Their death occurred at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for undisclosed reasons.
They were remarkable twins with partially fused skulls and 30% brain connectivity, sharing a unique bond.
Despite medical predictions suggesting a life expectancy of only 30 years, they defied the odds, living until 62 years and 202 days old.
This achievement places them as the oldest female conjoined twins in history, surpassing the previous nine-year record.
Notably, Lori and George also made history as the world’s first same-sex conjoined twins identifying as different genders. George, previously known as Reba, transitioned to male in 2007, citing inspiration from the renowned American actress and singer Reba McEntire.
Born in Pennsylvania on September 18, 1961, their life journey showcased resilience and determination. While Lori maintained able-bodied functions, George faced mobility challenges due to spina bifida, relying on a wheelchair that Lori skillfully manoeuvred as they navigated life together.
Their independence was evident in their living arrangements in a two-bedroom apartment in Pennsylvania. They maintained individual spaces, alternating nights in each room, reflecting their strong bond while respecting personal boundaries.
The siblings’ preference for independence was evident throughout their lives, including their decision not to undergo separation surgery. George once remarked in a documentary, “Why fix what is not broken?” underscoring their contentment with their shared existence.
Their passing marks the end of an extraordinary era, commemorated by Guinness World Records for their remarkable achievements.
The story comes at a time when conjoined twins still capture public interest, such as the recent marriage of Abby Hensel, which generated headlines and discussions worldwide.
Lori and George Schappell’s Legacy extends beyond their age and medical uniqueness, embodying resilience, acceptance, and a profound bond that inspired many worldwide.
