The world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, is gearing up for its highly anticipated inaugural voyage set for January 27, 2024, departing from Miami, Florida.
This immense 1,198-foot vessel, proudly owned by Royal Caribbean International, recently underwent regulatory inspections in Ponce, Puerto Rico, creating a buzz among cruise enthusiasts. CEO Michael Bayley shared the news on his Facebook page, further heightening excitement for this grand maritime event.

The Icon of the Seas promises an unparalleled luxurious experience, boasting state-of-the-art amenities and many entertainment options for its passengers. As the cruise liner readies itself for its maiden journey, the eyes of the industry are on Miami, where it is expected to arrive on January 9.

With a remarkable capacity for up to 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members, the ship is currently undergoing final preparations, encompassing regulatory checks, logistical arrangements, and the anticipation of more crew members, including a unique addition.
Highly anticipated launch

In the lead-up to the grand departure, the next few days are dedicated to ensuring every detail is in place, with yard workers wrapping up their tasks and additional crew members joining the Icon of the Seas. According to Bayley, the ship was officially handed over to Royal Caribbean on November 27, 2023, at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland.
This marked a significant moment in maritime history, signalling the beginning of a new era for cruise enthusiasts worldwide.
Incredible reaction’

Last July, a vibrant image of its stern section gained widespread attention, with some users labelling it a “monstrosity” and a “pile of decadence.”
However, experts later noted that such reactions were not uncommon. When asked about the response in August, Cruise expert Stewart Chiron explained, “Images of Royal Caribbean’s ships have often provoked strong reactions. The negative responses to Icon of the Sea seem to come from non-cruisers, as the current image showcases a colourful ship with numerous amenities.
