Woman Killed in Manchester While Saving Family from Knife Attack
A care worker was tragically killed while attempting to protect her family from a knife attack at their home in Gorton, Manchester. Alberta Obinim, 43, died after being repeatedly stabbed by an assailant late Sunday night.
The attack occurred around 11:20 p.m. when Alberta reportedly rescued a child from their room and tried to flee the house. Unfortunately, she was fatally injured in the process and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alberta’s daughter, 17, and her husband, 64, are currently hospitalized with severe injuries. A 22-year-old man, believed to be known to the family, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as neighbours rushed outside after hearing distressing noises. One neighbour found a small child hiding in their bushes. Others were forced to flee their homes as the attacker rampaged through the area, with some escaping through windows.
A colleague of Alberta’s, who visited the scene to lay flowers, expressed disbelief and sorrow. “She was amazing, she was lovely. I spoke to her last week. She was so kind and caring. It’s just a proper shock. She’s got a lovely family,” she told the Manchester Evening News.
Another witness, identified as Reese, recounted seeing the attacker chase a girl down the street and stab her. “I heard the neighbours saying ‘get in, get in,'” he said. “There was a guy with a knife chasing a girl. I said, ‘Leave her alone; it’s not worth it.’ She fell, and he stabbed her. I turned my car towards him, but the girl was in the way. He started chasing my car with a knife.”
A resident reported hearing screams and seeing a young man running in and out of the house, causing widespread panic. “They were saying ‘he’s got a knife,'” she said. “It was terrifying. People were staying inside; no one wanted to go out.”
Family friend Ibrahim Abu described Alberta Obinim as a cherished member of Manchester’s Ghanaian community and a dedicated attendee of the Blessed Baptist Temple in Levenshulme. “She was a very nice lady. We all go to church together. She always talked to people and was a mother to everyone. She was always laughing,” he said.
Derrick Wiafe, another friend, called her a “powerful and inspirational woman.”
Detective Superintendent Toby Facey addressed the community’s concerns, acknowledging the shock and confirming that an arrest had been made swiftly. “Our thoughts remain with those affected and their loved ones at this difficult time. We are doing all we can to support them,” Facey said.
The investigation is ongoing, with officers working through the night to determine the details of the attack. The police are calling for anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area near Barnard Road around the time of the incident to come forward. Local officers will continue to patrol the area to address community concerns and gather further evidence.
