Alabama prosecutors have announced their decision to pursue the death penalty for Loretta Carr, a 44-year-old woman accused of pushing a mother off a cliff.
The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office notified the court of their intent to seek Carr’s execution if she is convicted of capital murder, reports WAFF.
Carr, currently held without bond, faces charges for the murder of Mary Elizabeth Isbell, 37.
Authorities allege that Carr kidnapped Isbell before forcing her off a cliff into Little River Canyon in Fort Payne. The nature of their relationship remains unclear.
Carr’s daughter, Jessie Eden Kelly, is also charged with capital murder in connection with Isbell’s death.
Isbell was reported missing in late 2021, and her remains were discovered on June 28, 2023, at Little River Canyon National Park. Carr was arrested on June 25, 2023, and has pleaded not guilty.
Kelly, extradited to Alabama from Pennsylvania, where she was in custody at the time of her arrest, also faces charges. However, the reason for her arrest in Pennsylvania remains undisclosed.
The indictment follows a lengthy investigation into Isbell’s disappearance and subsequent discovery of her remains. Carr and Kelly’s alleged roles in the crime have led to a high-profile legal battle, with prosecutors seeking the harshest penalty.
