American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been charged with illegal drug possession following an incident during his performance at the Beach Please! Festival in Costinești, Romania.
The Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism – Constanța Territorial Service announced the initiation of criminal proceedings against Khalifa for unlawful possession of drugs, specifically cannabis.
According to official reports, Khalifa was found in possession of over 18 grams of cannabis and was observed consuming cannabis on stage during his recital. Video footage circulating online captured the rapper escorted by Romanian police officers from the festival grounds early Sunday morning.
In Romania, possession of marijuana can carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison. Khalifa, a 10-time Grammy nominee known for his candid advocacy of marijuana use, was questioned and subsequently released from custody after the incident.
In response to the controversy, Khalifa expressed regret, stating on social media, “I did not mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage.” He acknowledged the professionalism of the authorities and indicated he plans to return, albeit without publicly consuming cannabis.
The incident has sparked discussion about drug laws and public behaviour at music festivals. Khalifa, known for his openness about marijuana use, has previously discussed his habits, including attending his son’s parent-teacher conferences while under the influence.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Khalifa’s representatives have been approached for comment but have not responded at the time of reporting. The rapper’s fans and the music community await further developments in this story.
