As the 2024 presidential election nears, a recent USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll shows that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has a strong favourability lead over Ohio Senator JD Vance.
A survey conducted shortly after the Democratic convention indicates that 48% of likely voters have a favourable view of Walz, who was selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate. On the other hand, only 36% view Vance, former President Donald Trump‘s vice-presidential pick, favourably.
Poll reveals that Vance struggles to garner support from independent voters, with 47% expressing an unfavourable view of him compared to 36% who feel the same about Walz. Additionally, Vance lags behind Walz among Black Americans and female respondents, although he holds an advantage with male and white voters.
The contrast in favourability is stark among Different voter groups. Over half of Black voters view Walz more favourably, while only 15% feel the same about Vance. Walz also leads Vance among women and respondents aged 35 to 49.
This election cycle has seen vice-presidential candidates play a crucial role. This is particularly true after President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race in July, which elevated Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket. In terms of qualifications for assuming the presidency, Walz also leads Vance by 12 percentage points, 54% to 42%.
The poll surveyed 1,000 likely voters between August 25 and August 28.
