Emergency responders, including Mayor Brandon M. Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr., swiftly mobilized to the scene to coordinate rescue efforts. Their primary focus is on locating and extracting those believed to be stranded amidst the wreckage.

The collapse severely compromised the bridge’s main span, spanning the Patapsco River and Baltimore Harbor, adding complexity to the rescue operation. At least seven construction workers and an unknown number of vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the incident.

MarineTraffic data revealed that the Singapore-flagged cargo ship, Dali, was positioned directly beneath the bridge during the collision. The vessel, en route from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, is now at the center of a maritime investigation.

While the exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, initial reports suggest smoke emanating from the ship following the collision. Fortunately, all crew members aboard the Dali, managed by Synergy Marine Group, have been reported safe, with no injuries.

The Baltimore Fire Department, responding to the alarm around 1:30 am, described the situation as a “developing mass casualty event.” Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency responders cautiously navigating hazardous conditions caused by debris hanging from the bridge.

Authorities urge residents to stay informed for further updates on the unfolding crisis and ongoing rescue efforts. The aftermath of this tragic event underscores the critical importance of swift emergency response and community resilience in times of crisis.
