ROME – U.S. Vice President JD Vance says President Donald Trump remains optimistic about successfully brokering a peace deal to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome on Friday, Vance offered a brief update on the latest developments surrounding the conflict.
“I want to update the prime minister on some of the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and also some of the things that have happened even in the past 24 hours,” Vance said.
“I think we have some interesting things to report on—of course, in private—some negotiations.
I won’t prejudge them, but we do feel optimistic that we can hopefully bring this war, this very brutal war, to a close,” he added.
Vance’s comments came just hours after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the Trump administration may walk away from peace efforts if no clear progress is made in the coming days.
Rubio emphasised that while President Trump remains committed to finding a solution, the U.S. has other global priorities and won’t continue peace talks indefinitely without concrete signs of a possible agreement.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has stretched on for over three years, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions.
Trump, along with several European leaders, has been pushing for a ceasefire and a comprehensive peace deal to bring the conflict to an end.
