The US Secret Service shot an armed Indiana man near the White House early Sunday morning after being alerted by local police about a “suicidal individual”, the agency confirmed.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said agents were involved in the shooting following an armed encounter shortly after midnight on March 9 at the intersection of 17th and G Streets NW.
Federal agents had identified the man’s car parked near 17th and F Street, close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, just one block west of the West Wing of the White House.
The unidentified man was seen walking north toward Pennsylvania Avenue, where he was confronted by Secret Service agents just after midnight.
An armed confrontation occurred when the man reportedly pulled out a firearm, prompting agents to open fire. The man was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition.
No Secret Service agents were injured during the incident, the agency confirmed.
Former President Donald Trump was not in Washington at the time, as he was staying at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Authorities believe the man, who was described as suicidal, had traveled from Indiana to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, which prompted local police to alert the Secret Service.
The man’s motive remains unclear.
The DC Metropolitan Police’s Internal Affairs Division is now leading the investigation into the shooting.
In a separate incident during Trump’s first term in August 2020, a 51-year-old suspect was shot by the Secret Service after firing shots toward the White House and “running aggressively” toward agents. Trump was briefly escorted from a press briefing in the West Wing but later returned.
