An unidentified vehicle struck a large crowd in East Hollywood leaving at least 30 people injured, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Emergency crews are still investigating the cause of the incident, which has shaken the bustling Santa Monica Boulevard area.
The crash occurred near a popular music venue along Santa Monica Boulevard, where a crowd had gathered, many of whom were waiting in line to attend an event.
Authorities said the driver sped into the group, but no immediate motive or cause was confirmed.
Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Adam VanGerpen told ABC News that at least seven of the injured are in critical condition. All 30 victims were rushed to local hospitals and trauma centres by emergency responders.
More than 100 firefighters were dispatched to the chaotic scene, which included a destroyed taco truck and a toppled valet podium.
VanGerpen noted that most of the people standing outside the venue at the time of the crash were women.
One of the victims was found to have sustained a gunshot wound, although officials have not confirmed how or when the shooting occurred. Captain VanGerpen said there were early, unverified reports suggesting that the gunshot victim might have been the driver of the vehicle.
As of Wednesday morning, authorities had not confirmed the identity of the driver or whether the incident was intentional or accidental.
The investigation is ongoing, with police examining security footage and witness accounts.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion, with people screaming and rushing to help those who had been hit. Bystanders attempted to administer first aid before emergency services arrived.
The area of the crash is a high-traffic location, close to iconic Hollywood landmarks such as Sunset Boulevard and the Walk of Fame, which draws large crowds daily.
While no fatalities have been reported at this time, officials warn that the number of critically injured may rise in the coming hours.
Law enforcement agencies are urging witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
The Los Angeles Police Department has not yet stated whether charges will be filed or if the incident is being treated as a potential act of violence.
