KYIV — Ukrainian drones have reportedly carried out one of the deepest strikes into Russian territory since the start of the war, hitting a facility in the city of Izhevsk, located more than 1,300 kilometres (800 miles) from Ukraine’s border.
Residents of Izhevsk, the capital of Russia’s Udmurt Republic, reported hearing explosions early Tuesday, with local officials confirming a drone attack on a site within the city.
Alexander Brechalov, head of the Udmurt Republic, acknowledged the incident in a statement, saying emergency services were responding to the situation and that additional information would be released in due course.
Russia’s federal aviation agency temporarily suspended flights to and from Izhevsk Airport following the reported strike, though normal operations later resumed.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, but the extent of the damage remains unclear. Unverified images circulated on Russian Telegram channels appear to show smoke rising from an industrial area near the city.
While Kyiv has not officially claimed responsibility, Ukrainian forces have significantly ramped up long-range drone attacks on Russian infrastructure in recent months, targeting oil refineries, military factories, and logistical hubs deep inside Russian territory.
Izhevsk, located west of the Ural Mountains, is known for its role in Russia’s defence industry, including the production of air defence systems. The city was previously targeted in November 2024 when a Ukrainian drone strike reportedly damaged a facility linked to military manufacturing.
Today’s reported attack underscores Kyiv’s growing ability to carry out operations far beyond the front lines, despite Moscow’s efforts to bolster domestic air defences.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions and continued fighting along the eastern front, as Ukrainian forces seek to disrupt Russia’s supply chains and defence capabilities.
