UK PM Says Israel Has Right to Self-Defense, Urges Iran Against Retaliation
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Iran not to retaliate in response to recent Israeli airstrikes, calling for restraint from all sides to prevent further escalation in the region.
In a formal statement, Starmer addressed the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted strikes on military sites in Iran earlier this morning.
“I am clear that Israel has the right to defend itself against Iranian aggression,” Starmer said.
He emphasised that while Israel’s right to self-defence is recognised, further regional escalation must be avoided.
“I’m equally clear that we must avoid further regional escalation and urge all sides to restrain. Iran should not respond,” he added.
The Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military facilities came as a direct response to recent attacks by Tehran on Israeli sites, which have heightened tensions between the two countries. The IDF confirmed that the strikes targeted key Iranian military locations, aiming to disrupt operations that pose security risks to Israel.
Israel has consistently cited Iran’s growing military presence and influence as significant threats, justifying its preemptive and retaliatory strikes.
Israeli leaders have reiterated their commitment to countering Iranian actions that are perceived to endanger Israel’s security, describing the recent operations as necessary defensive measures.
Prime Minister Starmer’s statement comes amid a chorus of international voices calling for caution in the region.
The UK has long supported Israel’s right to defend itself while advocating for diplomatic solutions and stability, which Starmer emphasised in his call for restraint on all sides.
As the situation remains volatile, Starmer’s comments underscore the potential for greater international involvement if the conflict continues to escalate.
His plea aligns with a broader concern from world leaders who are closely monitoring the impact on regional stability, urging both Iran and Israel to avoid further actions that could lead to broader conflict and civilian harm.
