The two bodies discovered in a burnt-out car in Malmö have been confirmed as British men previously reported missing.
The deceased individuals are considered travel agents Juan Cifuentes, 33, and Farooq Abdulrazak, 27.
The car, which was found in an industrial estate in the Swedish city, was rented by Cifuentes and Abdulrazak. It was last seen passing through the Öresund Bridge toll station. According to a relative of Cifuentes, the Swedish police have been in touch with the family and are providing updates. “The car that was found is the one that Juan and Farooq rented. The Swedish police believe the bodies are possibly Juan and Farooq, but the identification is still pending,” the relative told MailOnline.
The relative noted that while there have been reports suggesting the men were shot, this information has not been officially confirmed by the police. Cifuentes and Abdulrazak were reported missing after failing to return from a business trip to Denmark and Sweden, which coincided with the Euro final.
Swedish authorities are investigating the possibility that the deaths are connected to gang violence. Initial findings suggest that the men were shot before the car was set on fire. Investigators are also searching for a third individual in close contact with the pair when they rented the vehicle.
No suspects have been identified, and Interpol is assisting with the investigation. Swedish police have stated that the bodies have not yet been officially recognised and are undergoing forensic examination. The case is being treated as a murder investigation.
“The two people who were found dead in the burnt-out car on Sunday afternoon have not yet been identified. Forensic examinations are ongoing. The incident is currently being investigated as a murder,” a Swedish police spokesperson said. “We have interviewed several witnesses and are seeking further observations and tips from the public.”
