Former New York Congressman Lee Zeldin shared his insights on Donald Trump’s increasing momentum in New York, describing the former president’s bid to win the state as challenging but impactful.

While Zeldin acknowledged that any Republican would face an uphill battle statewide, he pointed to Trump’s expanding support and noted that his presence could significantly influence down-ballot races.

“It’s certainly uphill for any Republican to win statewide,” Zeldin told ‘The Post’ in a phone interview, “but the president isn’t going to dismiss the reality that he’s getting stronger and stronger in this state.”

Despite New York’s historically Democratic lean, Zeldin emphasised that Trump’s grassroots approach energises his supporters. This approach includes appearances at local bars and shops to address safety and economic issues.

This was evident at his recent Madison Square Garden rally, where tens of thousands attended, with overflow crowds watching nearby.

Zeldin also cited shifting voter registration trends and polling data showing Trump narrowing his loss margin compared to 2020. According to RealClearPolitics, Vice President Kamala Harris currently polls an average of 17 points ahead of Trump in the state.

Beyond influencing the New York GOP’s efforts to retain House seats, Zeldin believes Trump’s impact on New York is personal. “I also think the president’s efforts in New York are personal. They hit close to home,” Zeldin said, noting Trump’s deep ties to the city he helped shape and where his son, Barron, now attends New York University.

Trump has previously spoken about his passion for winning New York. “I love New York, I’ve always loved New York, and we’re going to give New York a big play,” he said in September.

As for Zeldin’s future, the former congressman remained focused on the election. “All that matters is Nov. 5. We have to get President Trump elected and a Senate and a House to work with,” he said.
