As preparations intensify for Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid, insiders close to the former president’s campaign have disclosed that the final contenders for his running mate are North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Ohio Senator JD Vance.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that barring unforeseen developments, the 67-year-old Burgum and the 39-year-old Vance have emerged as front-runners for the GOP’s vice presidential nomination, with Senator Marco Rubio of Florida remaining in consideration but with diminished odds.
Rumours surrounding other potential candidates, such as Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr Ben Carson, have been dismissed by sources as unlikely picks, with one insider categorically stating that Carson’s selection would be “out of the question.”
Although Burgum and Vance have been widely speculated, the decision-making process within Trump’s inner circle remains closely guarded. Senior campaign adviser Jason Miller recently hinted during a Fox News interview that the announcement would be made “by this time next Monday,” coinciding with the commencement of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Insiders close to Trump diverge slightly on the probabilities, with one source giving Burgum a slight edge at 50-50 over Vance’s 30%, while Rubio and other contenders are assessed with a 10% chance each. Another source emphasized that the final decision will likely involve Burgum, Vance, or Rubio, though Burgum and Vance are perceived as having a more substantial chance.
A GOP strategist echoed this sentiment, noting the preference within Trump’s inner circle for Vance, backed by Donald Trump Jr. and close advisers. At the same time, donors reportedly favour Burgum due to stability considerations.
Known for his penchant for suspense and surprise in personnel decisions, Trump has kept details of the VP selection closely guarded, fueling speculation reminiscent of his unexpected choice of Mike Pence in 2016.
Events such as Rubio’s scheduled appearance at Trump’s rally in Doral, Florida, and Trump’s upcoming rally in Pennsylvania are seen as potential venues for the announcement. However, campaign spokesperson Danielle Alvarez affirmed that President Trump will ultimately determine the timing and manner of the announcement.
All three leading candidates have been prominent supporters of Trump’s policies and participated actively in campaign activities following the recent CNN debate in Atlanta on June 27.
