U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on comedian Rosie O’Donnell, suggesting she should be stripped of her American citizenship and remain in Ireland, where she currently resides.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, O’Donnell claimed it was “not in the best interests of our great country,” adding: “I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship. She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her.”

The explosive remarks follow decades of animosity between the pair, with their feud dating back to a 2006 episode of The View, in which O’Donnell criticised Trump’s handling of a Miss USA scandal. The host slammed Trump’s moral credibility, accusing him of hypocrisy and infidelity when he defended then-pageant winner Tara Conner amid underage drinking and drug use allegations.
The Miss USA pageant owner at the time responded by threatening to sue O’Donnell and publicly branding her a “loser.” The exchange triggered a long-running public spat that escalated during his 2016 presidential campaign when he name-dropped her in a debate, drawing applause from some supporters and condemnation from critics.
In 2024, after he was re-elected, O’Donnell moved to Ireland with her non-binary child, citing fears for her family’s emotional well-being under another administration.
“It’s been heartbreaking and personally very, very sad to watch,” she said at the time. “I don’t want to live with it if he were back in office. I’m very happy with the decision we made.”
Despite the bluster, legal experts say he has no constitutional authority to revoke O’Donnell’s citizenship.

Immigration courts do not have jurisdiction over U.S. citizens, and such a move would require a federal judicial process—one that legal analysts say would almost certainly fail, given O’Donnell’s lawful status and lack of criminal wrongdoing.
O’Donnell has yet to issue a response to Trump’s latest threats. The former talk show host had previously lashed out at Trump on social media, including a now-deleted post where she referred to him as an “orange anus.”
His statement has drawn fresh criticism from civil rights groups and political commentators, many of whom warned that the language used was undemocratic and authoritarian in tone.
“He may not like what Rosie says, but threatening to strip citizenship from critics is something you’d expect in a dictatorship, not a democracy,” one commentator posted on X (formerly Twitter).
This latest controversy comes as he continues his campaign to expand Republican control ahead of the 2026 midterms.
His use of inflammatory rhetoric on Truth Social has become a hallmark of his communication strategy, often used to energise his political base or target personal enemies.
Despite the heated words, there is no legal pathway available to carry out his threat, making the statement more symbolic than actionable.
