President-elect Donald Trump has named Florida Representative Matt Gaetz his choice for Attorney General, which surprised some observers.
Announcing the decision on Truth Social, Trump praised Gaetz’s legal understanding and commitment to Justice Department reforms.
“It is my Great Honor to announce that Congressman Matt Gaetz, of Florida, is at this moment nominated to be The Attorney General of the United States,” Trump posted. “Matt is a profoundly gifted and tenacious attorney, trained at the William & Mary College of Law.
He has distinguished himself in Congress by focusing on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice. Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System.”
Trump highlighted Gaetz’s stance on critical issues, stating that as Attorney General, Gaetz would prioritise eliminating “weaponised government,” strengthening border protections, dismantling criminal organisations, and restoring public trust in the Justice Department. Citing Gaetz’s work on the House Judiciary Committee, Trump noted Gaetz’s involvement in exposing government corruption and advocating for constitutional principles and the rule of law.
