Trump Meets with Family of Slain Texas Girl as Suspect Claims Unfair Trial Due to Media Coverage
The attorney representing Franklin Jose Peña Ramos, one of the Venezuelan nationals charged in the murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, has requested a protective order to shield his client from the adverse effects of intense media coverage.
Peña, along with Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel, faces capital murder charges in connection with Nungaray’s death. The young girl was found strangled in a Houston creek on June 17.
Peña’s legal team has filed a motion requesting that all parties involved—including law enforcement, forensic experts, and court officials—refrain from making public statements about the case.
The attorneys argue that such statements could lead to undue prejudice, compromising Peña’s right to a fair trial. They contend that recent comments by Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, which criticised the immigration system and described the crime as “horrific,” could unfairly influence the jury.
The motion also calls for a halt to further public dissemination of information regarding the case, aiming to prevent any additional bias against Peña.
The murder has ignited calls for tougher border enforcement. During a recent visit to the southern border, former President Donald Trump and Jocelyn Nungaray’s mother, Alexis, discussed the impact of the case.
Alexis expressed her frustration over the release of Peña and Martinez, alleging that their initial detention should have been maintained and questioning the efficacy of their ankle monitors.
Fox News Digital has contacted the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Peña’s attorney for comments on the ongoing legal proceedings.
