Former President Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS News, claiming the network engaged in “deceptive conduct” aimed at interfering with the upcoming presidential election during an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris.
The lawsuit, obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital, alleges that CBS’s actions were “partisan and unlawful,” accusing the network of “malicious, deceptive, and substantial news distortion calculated to confuse, deceive, and mislead the public.”
In the complaint, Trump’s attorneys argue that CBS’s editing of the interview was intended to “tip the scales in favour of the Democratic Party” as the 2024 Presidential Election approaches.
The lawsuit states, “President Trump brings this action to redress the immense harm caused to him, his campaign, and tens of millions of citizens in Texas and across America by CBS’s deceptive broadcasting conduct.” The controversy stems from discrepancies in Harris’s responses to the same question, which were presented differently in a preview and the subsequent primetime special.
Following the interview’s airing, Trump’s legal team demanded CBS release the full transcript of the “60 Minutes” segment, citing concerns over the editing that seemed to shield Harris from criticism.
CBS has refused, maintaining that the interview was not “doctored” and asserting its right to First Amendment protections. In response to the edited segment, Trump’s lawyers contended that news organisations must accurately represent events rather than distort them to favour a political agenda.
The lawsuit emphasises the significance of the interview, particularly regarding U.S. foreign policy in the Israel-Gaza conflict, stating that it occurred “mere weeks before the most critical presidential election in American history.” Trump is seeking a jury trial, at least $10 billion in damages for CBS’s alleged deceptive practices, attorneys’ fees, and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court. CBS News has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
