Donald Trump has ruled out any reconciliation with Elon Musk, declaring their once-close alliance is over following a week of public insults and deleted barbs on social media.
Speaking to NBC in a phone interview late Friday, the U.S. President was unequivocal when asked whether his relationship with the billionaire Tesla and SpaceX boss was salvageable.
“I would assume so, yeah,” Trump said, confirming the fallout. Pressed further on whether he had any interest in repairing the damage, he replied flatly: “No.”

The dramatic rupture comes after Musk used his social media platform X to criticise Trump’s immigration bill—dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill”—and escalate tensions with personal jabs, including a since-deleted claim that Trump appeared in the Jeffrey Epstein files. Another deleted post suggested the president should be removed from office, sparking alarm in Trumpworld.
Though Musk has since walked back some of his more inflammatory comments, deleting multiple posts in an apparent attempt to de-escalate the situation, the feud appears far from over.
White House warns Musk over Democrat funding.
In a striking development, Trump has reportedly warned that there would be “serious consequences” if Musk begins funding Democratic candidates.
The billionaire’s political contributions and influence have long played a strategic role in U.S. elections—and in Trump’s return to power.
According to White House insiders, there is growing concern that the row could jeopardise critical alliances and even threaten billions in federal contracts tied to Musk’s various ventures, including SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink.
On Friday, Trump hinted that a review of government contracts awarded to Musk’s companies could soon be on the table.
‘Maybe he’s gone nuclear’ – VP Vance calls for calm
Vice President JD Vance attempted to calm the storm, calling Musk’s outburst a “big mistake” but adding that the tech mogul is an “emotional guy” who simply let frustration get the better of him.
“I hope Elon comes back into the fold,” Vance said. “Maybe that’s not possible now because he’s gone so nuclear. But it happens to everybody. I’ve flown off the handle way worse than Elon Musk did in the last 24 hours.”
Despite the public friction, sources close to Musk have told M10News that the billionaire’s fury has started to cool, and he may be open to rebuilding ties with Trump.
Expert: Clash of egos made split ‘inevitable’
Dr Katie Pruszynski, a Trump researcher at the University of Sheffield, said the feud had always been a matter of when, not if. “The Oval Office wasn’t big enough for both of them,” she told M10News.
She pointed to deep ideological and policy differences that had long simmered beneath the surface of their partnership.
“Trump rejects the human causes of climate change, while Musk’s company Tesla is a global leader in electric vehicles,” she explained. “And while Musk is a staunch advocate for high-skilled immigration, the Trump administration briefly considered ending those visa programs.”
But, according to Dr Pruszynski, the real friction came from personality, not policy.
“These differences pale into insignificance compared to the real problem between the two: their enormous egos and their desire to dominate the spotlight. It was always going to end like this.”
From bromance to battlefield
Musk, who once supported Trump and helped amplify his messaging through X, had been instrumental in boosting right-wing media visibility online. His backing was viewed as a significant digital asset for Trump’s re-election strategy.
But recent public jabs marked a stark departure from their previously friendly rapport, indicating a complete breakdown in trust between the two power players.
With the 2024 election cycle ramping up and Trump back in the White House, the stakes for both men could not be higher.
