President Trump urged the Iranian people to rise against their government following the launch of a sweeping joint U.S.-Israeli military operation inside Iran, dramatically escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The coordinated strike, carried out just after 9 a.m. local time, has been designated “Operation Epic Fury” by the Pentagon. U.S. and Israeli forces targeted what American officials described as strategic military and regime-linked sites across Iran in an effort to eliminate imminent threats to U.S. national security and regional stability, Fox News reports
In video remarks posted to Truth Social, Trump addressed the Iranian population directly, combining warnings of ongoing bombardment with a call for political change once combat operations conclude.
“The hour of your freedom is at hand,” Trump said. “Stay sheltered. Don’t leave your home. It’s very dangerous outside. Bombs will be dropping everywhere. When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take.”
The president framed the moment as historic, telling Iranians it may represent their only opportunity “for generations” to seize control of their country’s future.
“For many years, you have asked for America’s help, but you never got it,” Trump said. “No president was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight. Now you have a president who is giving you what you want.”
Operation Framed as Defensive — But With Regime-Change Overtones
While Trump emphasised that the primary objective of the operation is to defend the American people, his remarks carried unmistakable regime-change undertones.
He described the Iranian government as a “wicked, radical dictatorship” and a destabilising force in the Middle East. The president asserted that Tehran poses a direct and imminent threat, accusing the regime of sponsoring terrorism and orchestrating violence beyond its borders.
“The Iranian regime seeks to kill,” Trump said. “The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties — that often happens in war. But we’re not doing this, not for now. We’re doing it for the future, and that’s a noble mission.”
The language marked one of the most forceful public appeals by a U.S. president for internal political upheaval in Iran during an active military campaign.
Nuclear Program at Centre of Escalation
At the core of the confrontation lies Iran’s nuclear program. Trump reiterated his longstanding position that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
“It has always been the policy of the United States, and particularly my administration, that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon,” he said. “I’ll say it again. They can never have a nuclear weapon.”
The president accused Tehran of rebuilding and advancing its nuclear capabilities despite ongoing diplomatic engagement. He characterised Iran as “the world’s number-one state sponsor of terror” and said prior efforts to negotiate a deal had repeatedly failed.
The U.S. and Iran had been engaged in indirect talks in recent months. On Feb. 19, Trump reportedly gave Tehran a deadline of roughly 10 to 15 days to reach an agreement. During his State of the Union address, he stressed that diplomacy would be backed by force if necessary.
Hours before the strikes began, Trump told reporters he was “not happy” with the status of negotiations, signalling that patience had run out.
Military Objectives and Threats to Infrastructure
Beyond nuclear concerns, Trump vowed to dismantle Iran’s missile infrastructure and eliminate its naval capabilities, signalling that the operation may expand if resistance continues.
He warned Iranian military and security forces — including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the armed forces and police — to lay down their weapons.
Those who comply, he said, would be granted immunity. Those who refused would “face certain death.”
Such explicit messaging directed at Iran’s internal security apparatus represents a sharp escalation in tone, effectively encouraging fractures within the regime’s enforcement structure.
Defence officials have not yet publicly detailed the specific targets hit during Operation Epic Fury, and battle damage assessments are still underway.
Risks of Retaliation and Regional Fallout
The strikes have heightened fears of retaliatory action by Iran or its regional proxies. Tehran has historically responded to direct military action with missile launches, cyberattacks or operations conducted through allied militias in the Middle East.
U.S. military installations across the region, Israeli population centers and key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz could become flashpoints if the conflict widens.
Analysts warn that open calls for regime change, combined with kinetic strikes on Iranian soil, significantly increase the risk of prolonged confrontation.
At the same time, supporters of the operation argue that decisive action may reset deterrence dynamics after years of escalating shadow conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States.
Humanitarian and Domestic Implications
Trump’s instruction for civilians to remain indoors underscores concerns about the humanitarian impact of the strikes. Urban bombardment and military targeting could place civilians at risk, particularly in densely populated areas.
Inside Iran, public reaction remains uncertain. The country has experienced waves of protests in recent years, including widespread demonstrations following the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini. However, state security forces have maintained tight control over dissent.
Whether Trump’s appeal resonates with ordinary Iranians — or instead galvanises nationalist sentiment in defence of the regime — remains to be seen.
A Defining Moment in U.S.-Iran Relations
The launch of Operation Epic Fury may represent one of the most consequential moments in U.S.-Iran relations in decades.
For years, tensions have simmered through sanctions, covert operations, cyber warfare and proxy battles. A direct, overt military campaign combined with a public call for internal political upheaval marks a new and highly volatile phase.
As operations continue and assessments emerge, the world is watching closely to see whether the conflict remains limited or spirals into a broader regional war with global implications.
The coming days are likely to determine not only the trajectory of U.S.-Iran relations but also the balance of power across the Middle East.
