Former US President Donald Trump caused a stir during his Conservative Political Action Conference speech when he seemingly forgot his wife Melania’s name, referring to her as “Mercedes” instead.

This incident raised questions about Trump’s memory and led to discussions comparing his mental acuity to that of President Joe Biden.

Dr. John Gartner, a former John Hopkins Medical School professor, pointed out Trump’s memory lapses and contrasted them with Biden’s cognitive abilities.

Trump’s previous bragging about his cognitive test results in 2018, along with his challenge to Biden to take the same test, added fuel to the discussion about his mental fitness.

The incident at the conference also brought attention to the age of the leading 2024 presidential candidates, as both Trump and Biden would be the oldest presidents in history by the end of their terms. Concerns about Biden’s memory have been particularly prominent, given his various lapses, such as mistakenly referring to French President Emmanuel Macron as “Mitterand.”

In addition to the “Mercedes” blunder, Trump’s handling of classified documents after leaving the vice presidency has been scrutinised. A report released by special counsel Robert K. Hur found instances of Biden mishandling classified information and described him as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Hur’s report highlighted Biden’s memory issues, describing his recollections as “hazy,” “fuzzy,” and “faulty,” with significant limitations in remembering critical milestones in his life. Despite this, the report concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence to establish Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The discussion surrounding Trump’s and Biden’s mental fitness has intensified as the November elections approach. Campaigners, pundits, and undecided voters are grappling with concerns about the cognitive abilities of the two presidential candidates, especially given their advanced age.

Trump’s “Mercedes” blunder and Biden’s memory lapses have become focal points in the debate over their fitness for office. The contrast between their handling of cognitive tests and their age has added complexity to the discussions surrounding their presidential candidacy.

As the election draws nearer, the issue of presidential candidates’ mental fitness will likely remain a topic of debate. Voters will have to weigh the candidates’ cognitive abilities, age, and handling of memory lapses when deciding who to support in the upcoming election.
