Efforts to confirm dozens of President Donald Trump’s political nominees collapsed late Saturday night after tense bipartisan negotiations broke down, with the former president abruptly withdrawing support and lambasting Senate Democrats in a fiery social media tirade.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of demanding over $1 billion in unrelated concessions to approve what he called a “small number of our highly qualified nominees.”

“This demand is egregious and unprecedented, and would be embarrassing to the Republican Party if it were accepted,” Trump wrote. “It is political extortion, by any other name.”

He went on to instruct Republicans to reject any deal and return home, saying: “Tell Schumer… to GO TO HELL! Do not accept the offer. Go home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are… and have a great RECESS. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
The dramatic intervention came just as lawmakers from both parties believed they were nearing an agreement to confirm up to 60 nominees before the August recess — many of whom had received bipartisan committee support. Instead, they rushed through just seven confirmations before adjourning.
Deal Collapses After Marathon Negotiations
Throughout Saturday, negotiators — including Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) and Schumer — worked on a compromise that would satisfy both the White House and Senate Democrats. According to sources, Senate Democrats were seeking assurances that Trump would lift holds on billions in funding for the National Institutes of Health and foreign aid, and commit not to impose further budget clawbacks.
In return, they reportedly agreed to move forward with several non-controversial Trump nominees.
“There were lots of offers made,” Thune said, reflecting on the talks. “There were several different times where I think either or both sides thought there was a deal in the end.”
However, behind the scenes, frustrations mounted. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) accused Schumer of repeatedly shifting the goalposts. “We’ve had three different deals since last night,” he told reporters. “And every time it’s been, ‘I want more.’”
White House Involvement and Strategic Halts
Mullin suggested the Trump administration was closely tracking the talks and was prepared to step in. “You get to a realisation that it was never about making a deal,” he said, accusing Democrats of using the negotiations to paint Trump as intransigent to his base.
“They want to go out and say the president’s being unrealistic,” Mullin said. “But we weren’t surprised. We were in constant communication.”
Democrats, however, argued that their core offer remained unchanged while Republicans kept expanding their nominee list — adding controversial, partisan figures to the package. They insist they negotiated in good faith.
Next Steps: Recess and Rule Changes
With the Senate now adjourned until September, the confirmation stalemate is expected to escalate. Republicans have ruled out recess appointments for now, but Mullin confirmed that GOP leadership is preparing to introduce changes to the confirmation process upon lawmakers’ return.
“We’re not going to sit on this,” he said. “There are going to be reforms. The American people are tired of this dysfunction.”
Meanwhile, Trump is likely to continue using his media platform to shape public perception and frame Democrats as obstructionists ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. His aggressive language — targeting Schumer and referencing “Radical Left Lunatics” — underscores his strategy of mobilising his political base through conflict-driven messaging.
