U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ended a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, in an extraordinary outburst that raised doubts over the prospects for a peace truce in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Zelensky had arrived at the White House for a planned visit to sign a deal between the U.S. and Ukraine, to exploit Ukraine’s resources jointly as part of a post-war recovery.
However, the meeting quickly deteriorated into a heated confrontation, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance accusing Zelensky of failing to show sufficient gratitude for U.S. support in Ukraine against Russia.
Trump sternly berated Zelensky, demanding he be more “thankful” for U.S. assistance and reminding him that without American support, Russia would have already overrun Ukraine.
You’re going to make a deal, or we’re going to owe Trump,” Zelensky told him. And if “we’re out, you’ll owe it out, and I don’t think it will be pretty.”
The dramatic exchange led Zelensky to leave the White House in his motorcade without participating in the planned joint press conference.
The much-anticipated minerals deal, intended to grant the U.S. a stake in Ukraine’s resources, was also left unsigned.

Trump later took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to further criticize Zelensky, accusing him of disrespecting the U.S. in its “cherish” the Oval Office. Trump added, “He can come back when he is ready for Peace,” suggesting that Zelensky was unprepared for a meaningful truce with Russia.
The Compromise Debate
The breakdown came after Trump urged Zelensky to consider “compro” ises” in a potential peace agreement with Russia, which has occupied large parts of Ukraine, leaving devastation in its wake. Trump stated, “You can’t make deals without compromises.” However, Zelensky, visibly upset, responded by showing graphic images of the war’s atrocities and denouncing Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “killer” who should not be accommodated.
Zelensky emphasized that there could be “no compromises with a killer on our territory,” referring to Russia’s times and the deportation of Ukrainian children. His defiant stance on Putin clashed sharply with Trump’s or practical negotiations.

Truce Efforts in Jeopardy
The tense altercation casts doubt on Trump’s ability to position himself as a potential mediator in the war, which has seen increasing international pressure on Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. Leaders from France and Britain recently visited the White House to urge Trump not to align with Moscow’s advocacy for continued U.S. support for Ukraine in the conflict.
After the incident, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed solidarity with Zelensky, telling him, “You are not alone,” in li” ht of the breakdown in the U.S.-Ukraine dialogue. Trump’s shift in policy, distancing himself from Ukraine’s efforts, has sparked alarm among Kyiv and European allies.
His comments suggest a more lenient stance toward Russia, as he has openly stated that he has held multiple discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, beyond the high-profile call in early February.
Fluctuating Stance on Zelensky
The clash is the latest chapter in Trump’s approach to Zelensky. Last week, Trump had labeled Zelensky a “dictator” and echoed Kremlin narratives blaming Ukraine for the war’s outbreak. Yet, a day before the Oval Office outburst, Trump struck a more conciliatory tone, stating publicly, “I have a lot of respect for him,” during a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Ongoing Military Escalation
As diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine continue to grow, Russia’s stance on Ukrainian territory intensifies. On Friday, Russian infantry forces launched an assault near Ukraine’s from the Russian region of Kursk, targeting areas reclaimed by Ukrainian forces last summer. The fighting remains fierce as the war shows no sign of abating.

The fallout from this high-stakes meeting casts further uncertainty on the prospects for peace and raises questions about the future of U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s quest for sovereignty.
